How to Stand out in the Crowd.
North Bondi had been going through a major change in its low density housing. Many of the old homes were being bought and developed into duplexes. This site was no different and that was probably the biggest issue. In a suburb of new duplexes, all of high quality, how was this one going to stand out?
Uber Bespoke!!
Fortunately our client wanted a bespoke design for the project. We started with a basement garage. The downwards driveway gave us some additional height to work with. We then planned the dwellings to see what the massing would look like and we found that the top floor protruded further than the main floor. To bind this to the rest of the building and to house services, we created the vertical spine that started where the driveways split, curved its way up the building, out around the level 1 bedrooms and then around the sides to connect to the rest of the building.
To make the design softer we broke down the articulation with softer materials and accentuated the curves with spectacular curved glass corner windows.
While the layouts were similar each of the dwellings had different internal materials and articulation to give these twins individual personalities.
